Plato-Descartes-Darwin Triumvirate: ISTMRN that the Plato-Descartes-Darwin triumvirate has lead us to a place where every nation has as its primary goal exponential economic growth above population growth. Plato taught us perfection Descartes, method, Darwin and Lyell, change. Since things change, why not toward perfection? Reasonable question, but how? Descartes – analyze perfection, use the material to uncover the spiritual. Again seems reasonable, but again, “How do we measure progress toward the light outside the cave?” The material, which is all we can measure, reduces to money as a reasonably good surrogate, though I prefer joules. I believe both 2000 food calories per day and $10,000 per year per person is a good surrogate for the spiritual. It provide life and life is all that is need for spiritual nourishment. After meeting 2000 calories per day, it’s all, ALL up to you, including money if you wish. Several of us think money is rather empty. Several even fewer of think (believe? is there any difference?) it’s nonsense that sacrifice in this life to the gods or to other people enhances favor in the next life. And boy-oh-boy, we have built empires upon those sacrifices, including heaven and nirvana. 67 yrs old today |
