Art as Purpose

Intellectual Art is, as I suspect many would suppose, an oxymoron? I suspect not. I think it’s what I do: the desk, and now flow “patterns” in a fossilized belemnites’ graveyard. Why do I “art”? For glory? Ahhhh, yes, sweet glory! Or perhaps to assume my social duty of humility and to “share” with others my ….. my ……. ? ……. My what? My take on the world? My proscription for the world? Or perhaps even more humbly, I see a pattern I want to explore, accentuate, create – to better understand the pattern and its relation to other patterns, things, thoughts, equations.

Perhaps it is that. Perhaps it is glory. Most likely a little or maybe a lot of both. So the “Kitchen Hanging”: Silicon and oxygen tetrahedra (light colors) supported by iron cores (brown circles) floating in the chaos. A spot (smudge) of carbon on one at least. This large acrylic done originally for a drawing class at MCC represents more “abstraction emerging from chaos” (more “knifing into” it, I think, as in The Desk). This abstraction vrs chaos seem to be a recurrent theme of mine. Well, I guess somewhat more than “seems”.
