Wedding Vows
Our wedding day: The wedding was Susie's parents' house in Speedway, Indiana. The ceremony was set for noon December 21, the winter solstice the start of the new year. What better time to start a new life?

It was a snowy December morning, 6 inches of drifting snow and wind. Dad drove my mother, sister, and me 70 miles from the "farm" in Mt. Summit, Indiana. Interstate 70 was closed due to drifting snow, but parallel US 40 was open. We left an hour and a half early to account for the snow to arrive by 11:00 am. We arrived at 11:30. Susie thinking that I had left her at the alter, pulled down her hair that she had spent hours on.

Bob Sherman, Presbyterian minister from New Castle in the church I grew up with didn't leave early and arrived at 1:00 pm. That was quite a compromise on the part of Susie's family who are Catholics.

Susie calmed down and was lovely in white. The wedding took place at 1:30. After a short reception for attendees in Susie's parents' basement, we attended a larger reception at some restuarant.

We flew that evening to Bangor, Maine, for our honeymoon with a scary snowy landing in Boston. We joined the 30,000 club on the almost empty "red-eye" flight from Boston to Bangor. We spent nights with my brother and his family and days in winter-empty Acadia National Park. Seven month later we took a vacation in the summer-empty Florida Keys. It's cheaper off season. Both Susie and I are skinflints.
