Self                         Student Years
The first of many publications, a junior author with my major advisor, Bill Melhorn. I had several more from my Master's research assistanceship at Purdue's Laboratory For Application of Remote Sensing (LARS for short), most as senior author. I taught for my PhD support at Purdue and Ball State. LARS was up on the till plain surrounding the Wabash Valley. Mark then Susie and I lived next to the river deep in the valley. I got in shape riding my bicycle up the hill. I usually picked the steepest paved roads with little traffic down the hill for the exitement that comes from the edge of control.

First Publication

This is a computer printout of a map of the Wabash Valley. We produced maps like these where W is water, S is soil or soy beans, and dashes and blanks are unknown. We could markup maps only when printed out on a 30 page per minute printer, each 50 line page representing about 2500 pixels. We got pretty good at picking contrasting printer symbols, my favorites were #'s and periods or commas. We also could see various scales on a computer screen and assign colors to a range of values, just as symbols are assigned for printouts, but we could not markup computer screens so we saved the effort to assign colors until we were sure we "got it right" (right being "showing something").
