Apprearance and Reality                        Science (Origins)

Musings: Today is May 6, 1970. The sun is shining as it has for billions of years; the leaves are just opening on the trees as they do every year; the disc jockey told me of his usual jokes this morning; and children are playing in the parking lot outside my window as children always seem to play, but something is strange.

Men argue about who should be blamed for the Yankees decline and who should be praised for making the all-star team; women complain about the new clothing styles while trying to be the first to obtain a “lastest” item for their wardrobes, but the conversations seem a little unusual somehow.

Many new buildings are rising in the city, cars are becoming faster and more powerful, and Apollo has landed on the moon, but some of the cheers for such accomplishments seem too hollow somehow. An air of uncertainty can be sensed drifting into the cities, the towns, and even the farmlands. The oldest questions still receive the oldest answers, but the answerers seem a little less convinced than usual. An indefinable metamorphism seems to be affecting the world around men who say change is inevitable and predictable. Four students were killed for throwing bricks and insults. Something is strange.

The term “revolution” is becoming a part of many people’s everyday vocabulary, even among those who denounce revolutionary tactics as a means of effecting change. Is a revolution immanent? Is it possible? Or is it already underway? If the answer is “yes” to any of these questions, who are the revolutionaries? Where do they live? And how do they operate? Or rather is change (abrupt end of entry)
