The following commandments are from Exodus 20:3-4, 7-8, 12-17 Thou shalt have no other gods before me Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of anything in heaven above, or that is in the earth below, or that is the water below the earth. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain. Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy Honor thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee. Thou shalt not kill. Thou shalt not commit adultery. Thou shalt not steal. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor anything that is thy neighbour's. Nearly the same words are from Deuteronomy 5:7-8, 11-12, 16-21 Thou shalt have none other gods before me. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain. Keep the sabbath day to sanctify it. Honor thy father and thy mother as the Lord thy God has commanded thee: that thy days may be prolonged and that it may go well with thee in the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee. Thou shalt not kill. Neither shalt thou commit adultery. Neither shalt thou steal. Neither shalt thou bear false witness against thy neighbour. Neither shalt thou desire thy neighbour's wife, neither shalt thou covet thy neighbour;s house, his field,, or his manservant, or his maidservant, his ox, or his ass, or anything that is thy neighbour's. My summary paraphrase 1. Worship no other gods 2. Make no images of heaven, earth, or water 3. Don't speak of God without meaning, futilely, vainly, hopelessly 4. Keep the sabbath holy 5. Honor your parents 6. Don't kill 7. Don't adulterate 8. Don't steal 9. Don't lie 10. Don't desire anything another has No.'s 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 are expressed in the negative "do not" and thus define "sins", while only two, 4 and 5 are expressed as desirable actions, or "goods" |
