Idea of God

"For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say He hath a devil. The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners."
         Matthew 11:18-19

I think Jesus is telling us here he is fat and often tipsy, if not drunk. Wine was a staple then because cheap water was putrid, used for washing and sewers. Alcohol covered the taste and smell, didn't make you sick, and even lightened your spirit and deadened your uncomfortable sleep. It fits his "live and let live" message.

I note that my bible does not capitalize man in "son of man" as do many translations. Perhaps that indicates a more general reference to all men , but then why the capitalized "Son" in most translations. In on-line supposedly original Greek version at Bible Gateway the term is: ὁ υἱὸς το_ ἀνθρώπου. I suspect the term applies to any "son of man"; me, you, Jesus. I still need to translate the phrase. Jesus only referred to himself with this term. Its meaning in English is self-evident. I am a son of man as are you and everybody. So whatever the "Son of man" can do, you can do. You judge good and evil. Perhaps his entire message is: "Yes, you sure do judge good and evil; you don't have to instead you can be a god too and return to the Garden of Eden before you discovered good and evil."

And academic and theological debates go on and on and on and on and on; about what we can never know.
