Idea of Time                       New Castle Years (Cheley Camps)                       Thought Process

Consciousness to Matter: I’ve heard is said, “Evolution has brought consciousness to matter.” You and I are testaments to that. Will consciousness persist for eternity? Humans will not. Or is matter knowing itself a destructive flash-in-the-pan? Or perhaps the seed of reversing the entropic decay of the universe. I think it will persist at least for another million years or so, but to do so it will probably need to diversify by natural evolutionary divergence or genetic engineering.

Neither trend is likely for a while, in fact we rush headlong into homogeneity while screaming “diversity”. I won’t know if matter becoming conscious is good or bad for the universe before I die among other “important” questions.

Reminisce: Rolle Walker, Tom Sass and I, the three gold keys awarded at Cheley Camps in 1961. I just found it among my things. I will wear if for a while, it’s still on the bronze chain when I wore in the next summer as a JC (junior counselor, free attendance). All three of us returned as JC’s. Winning a gold key was necessary to become JC. I believe the gold key is my most honoring award, it’s the only election I’ve won and it is for “best individual among your peer campers.” Only 15 year olds are eligible, 16 years old have to be JC’s, 17 year old “counselors’ aides.” I didn’t attend as an “aide” because of my focus on basketball, though I was invited. Tom did, Rolle not.
