The Desk (again):The desk is done, fully used – its purpose manifest. And the “sticky on smooth” surfaces, glossy paper for example is “negative”. Death Idea of "Other" Dad's Journal Entries: Dad’s partly filled in journal, on the first page is the note: THIS GOES TO SCOTT. I think he left me his idea of God. Following are all Dad's entries in a mostly empty 299 page Account Book Series 57-511, journal 57-531  Page 3: An abstract drawing of the earth, its equator and 40N, with known variable listed for, radius, diameter, circumference, mass, and distance from the sun in both metric and English units from which he calculated rotational velocity of 1037 MPH (1670 KmPH at the equator and an orbital velocity of 67,000 MPH (107 KmPH). Page 5: Page title – Inquiry – G – What is it – Relationships, then the same diagram as on page 1with labels for the equator and 40N as well as for geocentric orbits, and their associated weight (affected by gravity) and velocity, both English and metric. Page 6: In 18 billion lite years for lite to reach earth, is a quasar “now” here? (Glued to the page is an article from Astronomy Magazine, April 1993, pages 39-40, both sides of a single sheet. (the glue no long holds; the sheet is now just an insert. added August 24, 2016) Page 7: Dated 11-20-89. Today paper reported an optical telescope in San Diego or Conn identified a quasar 18 billion lite years from distant. Must mean no object between earth and that quasar to obscure the path the light took? Seems unreasonable in that distance a direct clear sight from earth? Added Jan 1990: Also where is that quasar now? (Then a drawing of time since the big bang and distance from earth to the quasar.) And where was it 18 billion lite years ago when its lite started toward earth? While receding from us at just under the speed of lite c-. But from Big Bang at beginning quasar at beginning had to travel 18 billion lite years to get where we observe it today. Quasar 18 billion years out, + 18 billion years for lite to reach us, so where is it that we see it? (Good questions, Dad, added August 24, 2016) Added 3-9-93: What about effect of gravity vrs light from galaxies as it passes? Page 9: Dated 8-1-91. Any insight to gravity by considering gravity & inertia together? Page 11: Also question of where is missing matter? Ans. At other end of all the “large to small” black holes. For a cosmos for forever. Also, if “light” is photons of waves without matter, then can “gravity” of black hole attract the photons without mass & prevent light from escaping from a black hole? (Yes, Dad, photons seem to be affected also by gravity and inertia). And gravity of galactic and solor (sic) systems can effect light rays from distant systems & “bend” them as they pass. (Yes, Dad, photons seem to be affected also by gravity and inertia). Light, no mass, only photon – yet gravity affect the light. So gravity is able to ACT on waves and “properties” without mass. Idea of "Other" Morality Soul Thought Process Back to my Entries: Here’s another along the same line, Dad. In ∆x∆p > h and ∆t∆e > h Are all ∆’s quantized? I suspect someone has an answer, perhaps several, both people and answers. ∆e is for sure, n’est ce pas? Or perhaps only when ∆t is continuous. And what about ∆x? ∆p of course, but what is p but mass (not relevant here), time and distance, so do we have ∆t • ∆t • ∆x > h or ∆t2 • ∆x > h? So perhaps time is even more complex than space, being exponentially quantizable. So now to make mass relevant, is it also quantized? I think the large hadron collider and its acolytes are focused in part on this question – the great Higg’s boson search, the “God particle”. And if “something” can’t be quantized, does it really exist? Or is it just a construct of consciousness whose worship yield great material rewards, which in turn lead to great feelings of power: power over “something else”, “something other” than the “self” (or for the squeamish, “humanity” or “nature” or “not human” or” not like me” or “not me”). Power over that “other” that does not “deserve” protection or “our” morality! It may be killed, destroyed, changed, tamed, or otherwise manipulated with no thought to “right” and “wrong”. So we may kill our enemies because they are not “human”; they are “barbarians”, not “civilized”, not “one of us”, God’s chosen. Three separate and independent articles in today’s paper referred to a convicted homosexual, child-sex-offender (like me, at least the latter) as “inhuman”, not worthy (in two of the articles) of Christian compassion, let alone forgiveness. My bias, I am a convicted child sex-offender. Does that change the “truthfulness” of my words? For many, I think “Yes”. This record, Dad, is but a stream of “truth”, observations and conjectures including conjectures like now about whether observations are really nothing but conjectures based on our biases. Aa stream of “istmrn’s” (ISTMRN) which is the only truth I know, the only truth that I can know. But is even “istmrn’s” an illusion or delusion? Of course! Cultural, genetic, personal history are no more true than “istmrn’s” of any other consciousness, perhaps even pond scum. Granite?, Well, even for me, granite is beyond moral protection, at least at the current human scale. The mountains will endure humans, at least for now. So, Dad, I am using your journal to continue your quest. I hope you are enjoying your dance with the galaxies. Now, though sadly, I doubt “you” are. Some of the atoms from your single sperm or Mom’s single egg may still be with me, more likely atoms from your breath, and a few of Caesar’s and Socrates’ as well. But most of your atoms, those that passed through you, are mingling in ever wider fields, as are your infrared photons released in the smoldering fires of your mitochondria. My atoms almost certainly retain an “excess” of yours. But mine and other such concentrations are fading to homogeneity, asymptotically, of course. This book has nothing to do with if not everything to do with the record. In that eternity there will always be the butterfly wings of resonance to each of us, and each of our breaths C + O2 → CO2 Reactions. So what? This record deals with another, similarly diffusive continuum: ideas, thought, consciousness, culture, language, and perhaps at the boundary with the physical, genetics (Pom’s specialty) to name a few. I probably bear a greater excess of these types of things, often summarized as “personality”, from you than of your atoms, most certainly in the arrangement of certain amino acids along many, many tumbled and twisted chains of hydrocarbon molecules. Again, so what? My thoughts, though greatly influenced by these common chains, pay no heed. They just “happen”. So thanks, Dad. You’ve been, are, a big one for me. I can’t help it, even if I wanted to which I don’t; that would be silly. I was just going to write a profound observation or conjecture, but as I searched for my “misplaced” pen, I lost the thought, profound though it surely was, n’est ce pas? Perhaps it was a nugget of truth unveiled for an instant then quickly hidden again by the Moirai. Perhaps mine or even human kind’s only chance at that nugget slipped away because I failed, not once, but twice at “mindfulness”. Once when I put the pen where I usually don’t and forgot where I put it, and second when I let my perplexed search drive away the now unobtainable nugget of babble. |
