All of Life as a Scum Layer: What is life but an ultra-thin veneer of green scum covering areas with enough water, sparser in successively drier areas? Living within the scum are a myriad of tiny creatures, but so rare as to be all but unnoticed by the living scum. Perhaps one type of those tiny creatures is beginning to catch the notice of the scum. The scum has survived volcanic holocaust, meteor impact, glacial ages, continental rifting, and global warming among others. It has survived for billions of years, spreading from sea to shore. Then the slime climbed to land a mere 400 my ago. Autumn: The first maples turned a few days ago, and with the cool last couple of days, fall color is about upon us, turning quickly this year. |
