Punishment: Our propensity to punish children when they do wrong, makes angry children who grow up and want to punish someone else, leading to “get tough on criminals” beliefs and politics, somewhat satisfying the urge, but not by much.

Gram or slugs? Kelvin or Fahrenheit? The universe doesn’t care about our measuring systems, so perhaps too for mathematics, just convenient ways, at least for us, of describing that part of the universe amenable to mathematics.
