Human Rights                              Government

The Chicago teacher’s union new president wants to (forget where I was going, oh, yeah, I remember) treat all schools equally despite different performances on standardized tests. I thought this rather Orwellian and communistic, to paraphrase a line from Animal Farm, “All schools are equal”. Are there really inferior and superior schools? Teachers? People? Certainly economically, but what about morally?

Has our liberal, western, democratic, egalitarian, politically correct viewpoint finally got morality right after millennia of failure? Or do we really believe that viewpoint since we spend most of our waking lives while working in rigid authoritarian hierarchies. Even though we have almost no freedom in such hierarchies (except the freedom to quit). We chose to relinquish our personal freedom to our “job” because of economic security, just as we relinquish our political freedom for national security.

I believe we would easily trade, in fact are trading, personal and political freedom for economic security. We live in perhaps the most regulated society in history, yet yell, “WE ARE FREE”
